A diagnosis of a tumour of the brain or spine may affect you physically, emotionally and socially. At the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery we cater for all of your needs during your treatment and care with us.
Brain tumours or spinal tumours (whether malignant or benign) can be extremely complex, but we have some of the very best neurosurgeons and specialist support teams in the world available to manage the diagnosis, treatment and management of your tumour of the brain or central nervous system (CNS).
The neuro-oncology service at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square is run by an experienced group of consultants who have expertise across the fields of neuroradiology, neurosurgery, neurology and medical oncology. This specialist team offers an integrated service for the diagnosis and treatment of the full range of tumours of the brain, skull base, pituitary gland and spine.
State-of-the-art treatment options
Our consultants can offer the most cutting-edge treatment techniques for both benign and malignant tumours. From advanced neurosurgery and chemotherapy to the latest immunotherapy and hormone treatments, our consultants are leading the way in modern neurological cancer treatment and care. This includes surgery guided by the latest MR imaging techniques, which takes place in our MRI operating theatre (the first in the UK). Other techniques include gliolan immuno-fluorescence (which helps us to identify glioma tumours better) and ‘awake’ surgery techniques, where patients remain conscious throughout surgery.
We also use cutting-edge molecular and other diagnostic techniques to analyse specimens in our neuropathology department. This helps us to understand your future prognosis and supports us in creating a care package for you using personalised medicine.
A multidisciplinary approach to patient care
Our specialist consultants and the multidisciplinary team will assess your individual needs to make sure that you are given the best care for your tumour.
At our weekly neuro-oncology MDT meeting, our consultants and a team of sub-specialist experts will come together to assess your individual needs to make sure that you not only receive the most appropriate treatment, but also the holistic care and support that you need during your time with us.
