Professional background
Mr George Prezerakos is a consultant spinal neurosurgeon at the National Hospital for Neurosurgery, Queen Square, UCLH and honorary associate professor in the Institute for Neurology, University College London.
He trained in neurosurgery in the University College London, Imperial College Hospitals and Barts and The London combined programme, having being awarded a national training number.
He specialised further in spinal surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore and at the National Hospital for Neurosurgery, Queen Square, by completing the Victor Horsley combined orthopaedic-neurosurgical spinal fellowship.
He is trained in minimally invasive spinal surgery, including techniques such as keyhole, tubular access and computer spinal navigation guidance at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell, New York.
He has an interest and expertise in managing and treating a wide spectrum of spinal conditions, including back and neck pain, targeted spinal injections, slipped disc and sciatica, lumbar stenosis, spondylolisthesis and spinal stabilisation, cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy, osteoporotic spinal fractures and vertebroplasty, spinal trauma, minimally invasive surgery including tubular access and percutaneous techniques, intradural and metastatic tumours of the spine, artificial discs and spinal motion preservation, chiari and foramen magnum decompression, syringomyelia and spinal fluid pathologies as well as cervical deformity and cranio-cervical junction pathologies. He has an expertise in treating patients with problems related to previous spinal operations - revisional surgery.
He holds a PhD in basic science. He was awarded the Inchape educational grant as well as the Pain Section prize by the American College of Neurosurgical Societies. The British Association of Spinal Surgeons awarded him the President’s travelling fellowship in 2016.
He has presented research in artificial disc spinal motion preservation at an international level and has published in tumour excision techniques and cervical deformity correction.
His current research interests include incorporating the patient experience into clinical decision making as well as the co-development and validation of emerging spinal technologies such as robotics and navigation.
Mr Prezerakos is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons England. He is a member of the British Association of Spinal Surgeons, The British Society of Neurosurgeons, The European Association of Neurosurgeons, International AO Spine and the North American Spinal Society.
Research interests
Mr Prezerakos has an interest in evaluation and intergration of new technologies introduced in spinal surgery such as computer navigation, robotics and novel devices, as well developing tools for the intergration of the patient experience (patient reported outcomes) in clinical decision making.
